Worth shelling out for

Belgravia’s latest restaurant and bar opens in Motcomb Street in May 2008.

The team behind the highly successful Thomas Cubitt pub on Elizabeth Street is opening a second neighbourhood restaurant on Motcomb Street. The Pantechnicon will open in May, on the site of the former Turk’s Head pub.

Downstairs will be an elegant and striking bar and restaurant with a particular emphasis on shellfish. Upstairs the dining room will serve a wider menu, and guests can relax in light and airy surroundings, with sash windows, panelled walls, velvet armchairs and an open fireplace.

The Pantechnicon - 10 Motcomb Street -pays tribute to a prestigious building that once stood in Motcomb Street as a depository for the antiques and art belonging to London’s elite. The horse drawn carriages used to transport artefacts to and from the building were known as “pantechnicons.” A fire in 1874 largely destroyed the building, although the large Doric columned façade still remains.
