Great fun was had by all at this year’s Motcomb Street summer party – in spite of the weather. It poured with rain all day, but the party carried on, with revellers refusing to let the bad weather dampen their spirits. Tap-dancing extraordinaire Lionel Blair officially opened the party, and treated guests to a rendition of “Singing in the Rain.” Backstage he revealed that he enjoys eating at neighbourhood restaurant Motcombs – “It’s an amazing place,” he said.
Local businesses, including Waitrose and the Berkeley hotel, set up food stalls on the street, and local shops were open late. The Beatles and George Michael tribute acts got everybody up and dancing in the street.
The party raised money for two charities: the Jubilee Sailing Trust, which offers adventure holidays to disabled people, and Honeypot, a charity supporting vulnerable children and young carers. “Oh what a night,” said Philip Lawless, Chairman of the Knightsbridge and Belgravia Business Association that organises the party. “Talk about raining on my parade. It rained from 7am til 12.30am, but despite all that we had almost 1,500 people on the street and probably raised £35,000 – not bad. It goes to show that the quality parties we gave over the years came home to roost.”
See you at next year’s event.
